Oceanic

When we first looked for land away from the city in the late 80’s I was happy to make my home amongst the gum trees but my sister and our friend Peter Tovey want to be by the Ocean. So when we found our block at Johanna we had tees and the sea, still, the ocean was too restless for me I would prefer a slow running creek or a lake. over the years down here I have come to love the sea, the ocean but not in its usual cliched form of the frozen wave or the sweeping beach something of its continuous restlessness still calls me its power depth and mystical quality. That is what I have tried to capture in my series Oceanic. Using very long exposure many minutes some times 20-30 with ND 20 filters is a bit like shooting in the dark with slow film as I don’t really know what I’ve captured or that the ever-changing motion of the ocean has given me. And that’s the magic the mystery a bit like the old days of large format film.
