WILD SKIES OVER JOHANNA: Mostly, when we’re absorbed by a magnificent sunset, we’re taking in the whole horizon. Our eyes zoom in naturally and our heads turn so we see the whole 180 degree panorama. To photograph the whole view we’d often go to a wide lens which, while it captures the span of the “earth set” (we move, the sun does not), it also puts distance between us and the magical dance of light we are seeing. For me, that leaves my photograph lacking the intensity I feel. To capture this intense beauty & dynamic I want to be close, so I choose a 300mm lens for my sunsets. I compose not a tight frame around the sun, but a panorama of several images – 3, 4 or even 5- however many it takes, then I stitch then together to get the image you see here. Taking you, I hope, to the heart of the beauty of this magnificent sky, revealing a choreography of clouds & light.

Along the way, I discovered artists like David Hockney, Jeffrey Smart, and Picasso, and photographers like Bert Stern, Pete Turner, Edward Weston, Ansell Adams, Gregory Crewdson, and Andreas Gursky who inform and support my own creative visions.
The theme that tracked through my body of work across the years was the built environment; the drama and beauty of its graphic lines and abstracted forms. More recently this has evolved into an exploration of the architecture of the natural world and how we might shift our everyday perceptions beyond the habitual and clichéd ways of seeing.
