Swordgrass Brown

$95.00

Inspired by all the swordgrass browns flying around their Gahnia hostplants in Marengo Nature Reserve. ‘Found only in Australia, the Swordgrass Brown Tisiphone abeona (left) presents vivid wing patterns. Their wings are brown with a broad yellow stripe. Two blue eyespots can be seen on each fore and hind wing. Black and orange bands encircle these eyespots. Reaching wingspans of 60mm, the Swordgrass Brown slowly flies within a meter or two of the ground from September to April. Their preferred host plants are Gahnia species (right), which are grass like plants common to the Otway National Park region. Females lay their eggs upon Gahnia species where larva begin to emerge after 10-11 days (words by Molly Fisher)’. The Otway Coastal Butterfly project has been surveying butterflies around the Otways, collecting important baseline information needed for conservation of these species.
